Project Overview

St. Mary’s County Arts Council led a call for art to create a community-inspired mural. This mural is more than just a work of art—it is a platform for amplifying the voices, stories, and contributions of the area’s Spanish-speaking community.

By engaging directly with community members, we aimed to create a mural that reflects their resilience, cultural heritage, and lived experiences.

The mural is located next to El Rinconcito Mexican Restaurant, 21703 Great Mills Rd Unit D, Lexington Park, MD 20653, and an outdoor seating area, making it an accessible and welcoming space.

Through this public art project, we strove for visibility, inclusivity, and pride within the community while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the Pax River Village Center.

Project Goals

  • Celebrate and represent the Spanish-speaking community of Lexington Park.

  • Engage local residents in shaping the mural's themes through participatory methods including “Meet the Artist” events with Rosalia Torres-Weiner on August 20th & 21st and an anonymous online feedback form.

  • Create a lasting visual tribute that honors the heritage, resilience, and contributions of the community.

  • Enhance the public space and foster a sense of belonging while incorporating storytelling elements that highlight community values, traditions, and identity.

Why This Project Matters

Lexington Park is home to a vibrant Spanish-speaking community whose voices, traditions, and contributions we want to uplift. This mural serves as a symbol of representation and empowerment, showcasing beauty and diversity of culture.

Through an inclusive process and anonymous feedback form, we ensured that community members had a direct role in shaping the mural’s message and imagery.  It was critical that this project be conducted with care, respect, and confidentiality to create a safe space for storytelling and artistic collaboration.
