St. Mary’s County Arts Council (SMCAC) is an independent, non-profit organization whose primary goal is regranting state funding to support local arts programming. SMCAC was incorporated and received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 1987.
The bulk of SMCAC funding comes from the Maryland State Arts Council and is directed toward arts organizations, educational venues and artists who create publicly accessible art.
We also provide leadership, strategic implementation and advocacy to bolster the greater arts community.

Position Description
The Outreach Coordinator provides direct administrative and clerical support for the St. Mary’s County Arts Council (SMCAC) Executive Director and Board of Directors, including but not limited to the organization of community events, end-of-year Key Performance Indicators (KPI) reports, monthly board meetings, the scholarship program, staff meetings, and serves as the Volunteer Coordinator.
Also attends networking events, creates a monthly e-newsletter, runs social media platforms, performs website updates, writes a monthly spotlight feature, plus performs other duties as assigned. Is proficient to cover the gallery and perform related tasks.
Job Description
Essential Functions:
Provides administrative support to the Executive Director (ED) and Board of Directors.
Answers phone and directs messages to appropriate recipient.
Answers and screens email communications.
Answers and screens messages received via social media channels.
Prepares various reports, forms, correspondence, etc., as directed.
Maintains and manages the SMCAC website.
Utilizes technology effectively in performance of job duties including managing social media accounts (Facebook and Instagram), Squarespace (website), Constant Contact for e-newsletters, Canva, Snappa, Poster My Wall, etc.
Plan, attend, and scout community events where the Arts Council should be represented. Coordinate volunteer support
Increases professional knowledge through attending workshops and conferences and participating in professional association activities.
Write and produces press releases including monthly Spotlight on the Arts, newsletter content, promotional materials, blog posts, and general advertising.
Assists as needed in Gallery for coverage of shifts.
Plans and coordinates in-house exhibits and marketing in collaboration w/ Gallery Manager.
Assists w/ coordinating and overseeing annual Art Walk Contest event.
Assists w/ keeping gallery, office, and related areas/storage spaces clean and orderly.
May fill in for Executive Director related tasks as needed when ED is unavailable due to time off/other ED obligations.
Performs other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Arts Council’s policies and procedures.
Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Arts Council to the public.
Ability to gain knowledge of the staff, activities, and operations of assigned office.
Ability to effectively communicate with staff, board, colleagues and constituents.
Ability to prioritize and multitask.
Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software, and basic office machines.
Basic math and English language skills.
Education and Experience:
Associate degree or higher preferred.
Two or more years of related experience or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to interact appropriately with a diverse community population.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Work requires no unusual demand for physical effort. Must be able to perform basic functions for in-house and off-site Gallery-related tasks such as (but not limited to): standing on low-height stools for hanging art, reaching overhead, and lifting of items up to 25 pounds.
Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting rooms, e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls.
Community events involve the organization of materials, working in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, transporting items to and from event sites via hand carrying and/or the use of a wagon, and other related requirements. Lifting requirement of up to 25 pounds.

Job Details:
This is a part-time, benefit-exempt 30-hour-per-week position.
Pay: $20/hour.
Reliable transportation source required to and from the SMCAC Gallery located in downtown Leonardtown, plus off-site community and networking event venues located within St. Mary’s County.
Availability on First Friday afternoon/evenings are a must as well as one to two Saturdays a month for offsite community events. Occasional extra weekday and Saturday shifts are required for gallery coverage.
Meeting Requirements:
Attend staff meetings twice a month.
Attend board meetings in person every third Thursday from 5 PM - 6:30 PM at the Leonardtown Town Hall, with early arrival to assist with set up.
Attend other important annual events as related to Maryland Arts Day, Maryland Arts Summit, Maryland State Arts Council, etc.
Attend Leonardtown Business Association monthly meetings on the second Friday of the month from 8:30 to 9:30 AM.
Attend monthly St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours meetings, usually every last Wednesday of the month from 5 - 6:30 PM. Locations rotate within St. Mary’s County.
Work Location:
The SMCAC Gallery is located at 22660 Washington St., Leonardtown, MD 20650.
A portion of the hours may be worked remotely.
Off-site community events (St. Mary’s County).
Some in-state travel 1 - 2 times a year.
