2025 MD Arts Summit Part 2 (New Art at Largo Metro)!
A unique art piece is blooming where a Metro Blue Line Station intersects with The Perennials, a new landmark public art installation.
This ultra eco-friendly artwork was officially unveiled on June 17, 2025, at a celebration including artist Anaitte Vaccaro, Chief Curator Rhonda Dallas of the Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) officials, community leaders from Prince George’s County including the Largo Town Center Association, plus other special guests.
The opening celebration was also part of a Networking Reception for attendees of the 2025 Maryland Arts Summit event held nearby at Prince George’s Community College.
Anaitte Vaccaro is an award-winning, international artist born and raised in Puerto Rico. She coined the term “Digital Scenography” to describe her work in creating sensory immersive experiences combining a variety of artistic disciplines with modern-day technology.
The Perennials was commissioned by the Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council in partnership with WMATA’s Art in Transit Program. This sculpture features stand-alone, solar-powered pieces each hand-painted and created from recycled plastic. Cell phone charging stations and night time lights are integrated into each of the four sub-sculptures.
Anaitte shared that the concept of The Perennials started in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico in 2017 where catastrophic damage devasted the area and resulted in thousands of deaths. The Perennial is reflective of nature’s innate ability to regenerate and serves as a reminder of renewal and hope amid destruction.
We very much enjoyed admiring and learning about the artwork, as well as meeting the artist and many other new friends!
