About the St. Mary’s County Arts Council

The St. Mary’s County Arts Council (SMCAC) is an independent, non-profit organization whose primary goal is regranting state funding to support local arts programming. SMCAC was incorporated and received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 1987.

The bulk of SMCAC funding comes from the Maryland State Arts Council and is directed toward arts organizations, educational venues and artists who create publicly accessible art.

We also provide leadership, strategic implementation and advocacy to bolster the greater arts community.

The vision of St. Mary’s County Arts Council is to provide leadership to arts organizations and artists, encourage new creative endeavors by artists and arts organizations in St. Mary’s County and invest in the cultural treasures specific to St. Mary’s County. 

Position Description

The Gallery Manager is the primary representative of the St. Mary’s County Gallery & Gift Shop to the public and the artist community. The manager fosters connections with and within the artists, the public and the organization and reports to the Executive Director.

Job Description

Primary Objectives:

  • To support our local artists and advocate for them.

  • To give artists opportunities by showcasing their work.

  • To offer exhibitions which are well coordinated, engaging, and ideally generate sales.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure the successful daily gallery operations.

  • Maintain the gallery premises and equipment.

  • Ensure the gallery is staffed during hours of operation.

  • Greet and assist gallery visitors and artists in person, by phone, and email.

  • Process and record sales accordingly.

  • Maintain gallery database and inventory ensuring up-to-date and correct information.

  • Improve and ensure adequate data collection regarding visits, sales, etc.

  • Oversee the finances of the gallery, including but not limited to: monitoring, tracking, and reporting of all sales, and quarterly gallery payment processing to artists.

  • Collaborate with the Outreach Coordinator for effective gallery marketing for gallery events, shows, etc.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with local artists and art venues.

  • Ensure exceptional exhibition management: 

    • Plan and implement each exhibition’s thematic focus and help design exhibition layout.

    • Assist with researching exhibition concepts for upcoming shows.

  • Manage all contracts for exhibiting artists.

  • Collect and organize artwork for exhibitions and return unsold pieces. Create all exhibition tags.

  • Ensure proper care, safety, and storage of artworks.

  • Ensure interns and volunteers receive appropriate training and education.

  • Other duties as needed include, but not limited to, general office administrative and operational support plus general gallery house-keeping and upkeep.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree (preferred) or equivalent experience and/or certifications.

  • Preferably, 1-2 years experience in an art gallery, administration, non-profit, retail, or similar setting.

  • Experience with art media and related disciplines.

  • Knowledge of Google Workspace, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Mac computers.

  • Experience with Square and database administration, a plus.

  • Articulate verbal communication and strong presentation, writing, and editing skills.

  • Excellent organization, multi-tasking, and time management skills.

  • A mature, pleasant, positive attitude and ability to work independently and in partnership with minimal supervision in a cooperative environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform physical duties as required by job including but not limited to: 

    • Lifting and handling art up to 15 pounds.

    • Standing on a low-height step-stool for hanging of art.

    • Reaching overhead for hanging of art.

    • Squatting/reaching to floor for arranging of low shelf art.

    • Moving tables, chairs, and equipment not to exceed 15 pounds in weight. 

    • Community events include both indoor and outdoor locations with varying temperature conditions.

Job Details

  • This is a part-time, 25-hour per week position.

  • Pay: $16 - $18/hour commensurate with experience.

  • Reliable transportation source required to and from the SMCAC Gallery located in downtown Leonardtown, plus off-site galleries and special event venues located within St. Mary’s County.

Schedule

  • 5 hour shifts, Wednesday - Saturday from 11 AM - 4 PM (20 hrs/week in Gallery).

  • Floating 5 hours for attending meetings, emails, gallery cleaning, occasional off-site gallery visits, etc.

  • 9 hour shift on the First Friday of the month (except January) from 11 AM to 8 PM.

  • Additional gallery hours as needed for special events in downtown Leonardtown.

  • For major community events, we need all staff members to assist and the gallery will be closed.

Meeting & Committee Requirements

  • Attend staff meetings twice a month.

  • Attend board meetings in person every third Thursday from 5 PM - 6:30 PM at the Leonardtown Town Hall. In-person attendance is preferred, virtual option is available.

  • Attend other important annual events as related to Maryland Arts Day, Maryland Arts Summit, Maryland State Arts Council, etc. Generally, two to three times a year.

  • Attend Board Membership Committee, first Wednesday of the month 5 PM - 6 PM (remote).

  • Attend Leonardtown Business Association Retail Committee meetings on the third Monday 10 AM - 11 AM.

Work Location

  • The SMCAC Gallery is located at 22660 Washington St. Leonardtown, MD 20650.

  • On occasion: off site community events (St. Mary’s County).

  • Some in-state travel 1 - 2 times a year.
